It packs a year’s interest into the 3 months when the garden will likely be in decline – between now and yuletide. It flowers in August however the real show starts in mid-September when clusters of berries begin to ripen to a showy shade of violet. The shrub is a six-footer and it’s covered with them. Because the season moves on, the leaves tackle flaming autumnal tints that contrast strikingly with the berries. Even after the leaves have fallen, the berries cling on until the tip of December. Easy to grow, it only wants a sheltered spot in sun or light shade with rich, fertile but reasonably well-drained soil, and it doesn’t need pruning.
